Moultrie I-40 Trail Camera Review

I checked with the owners of the Trail Camera Store and they confirmed that the Moultrie Infrared Trail Cameras are the most popular line on the market. The ease of use and low price make them an easy choice for any hunter. When you combine ease of use and price with amazing photos and reliability, you have a winning combination. The Moultrie I-40 offers the ability to capture still images and movies both day and night. When the I-40 was originally released many people complained of pictures being “white out” but I have not seen that as a problem since Moultrie updated their firmware.

The only real difference between the Moultrie I-40 and the Moultrie I-60 is that the I-60 has a viewing window for pictures in the field. I really do not see this as a determining factor when purchasing a trail camera. The I-40 has a great trigger and reaction speed and the pictures are very detailed. I have had no water, moisture, or insect issues with my Moultrie I-40 housing. I would like to mention that when you pull the mounting strap very tight, you can stress the case and create openings for moisture and insects if you pull to tightly. I have also been very pleased with battery life. When you check the camera ever two weeks and lose track of when you changed batteries last, that means the batteries are lasting long enough. Overall I love the Moultrie I-40 and recommend them to all my hunting buddies. The I-40 is one of the best, if not the best, trail cameras available today. If you own a Moultrie I-40 I hope that you will share your opinion with us, and we look forward to hearing from you.

for the money you can’t beat the Moultrie I-40. it is a huge improvement from the D40 and very cheap.

I was disappointed right out of the gate with the Moultrie I-40. I fastened the Moultrie to a tree with the manufacturer strap. Then I took off the side cover to put in the memory card. Next, I put the cover back on and it wouldn’t fit tight again because the plastic body was designed poorly! The strap loop on the outside of the body is right next to the area where the side cover comes off to get at the memory card. When tightening the strap to the tree it distortes (pulls plastic body or slightly bulges outside body) the side cover area so that the side cover won’t seal or fall in place correctly!

I have been happy with this purchase. The tree attachment hasn’t been an issue as I have built a security cage for this camera that works well. The only complaint that I have is the trigger time. It is SLOOOOOOWWWW. For the money, can’t beat it.

I used the I40 for several months to track the deer eating me out of the neighborhood and it worked well. Then it just stopped working. It puts up code 02000 and does NOTHING. No Pictures, day or night… NOTHING. Moultrie hasn’t posted the codes on their site that I have found. It may be a pretty deal for a couple of hundred bucks, but I would think it should work longer than it has.

I retract the comments of February 26th. I got hold of Moultrie and they got me back up and running. I wish the manual was a little clearer, but the camera, aside from my down time has performed beautifully.

Does anyone know of any security boxes for sale that fit the moultrie I40. and I don’t mean the Moultrie Brand one. I saw a youtube posting that eliminates that one from my checklist.

    any help would be appreciated..

    Thanks,
    Scott

The i4 didn’t cut it for me. In fact it was a warranty camera for a i6 that quit working in less than a year. The i4 quit working in less than 4 months. The i4 still had “white-out ” images and the lcd faded so it couldn’t even be read. At least the moultrie service has been good on making things right with me. Sad thing is, now’s the time for trail cameras to be hung on a tree and not a repair rack.

I have been disappointed with my I40 because of 2 problems:
    1) The menu display went bad and cannot be read. (I had an older model Moultrie with the same problem) Luckily, I know the steps to take as the pictures are still good
    2) The camera is in so. Texas (where it’s hot) and seems to be triggered by the daytime heat.

how do i download to a memory stick? Also when removing SD card do i have to shut off the camera? the book tells you none of this.

I have trouble with all 3 of my Moultrie cameras for daytime whiteout. Anyone with helpful suggestions please call me 731-644-9599. Moutrie technical assistance is impossible to get in contact, wait time is always 90+ minutes. HELP!

The best I have found. The picture quality on the Moultrie I-40 is 2ed to none. I have read a lot of reviews about the card being hard to get out. I’ll let you in on a little secret. If your going to replace it with another card so you can take it home to check out your pictures, then use the case as a pair of tweezers to remove the card. For the price of the camera and the quality of the pictures, it can’t be beat. As far as the strap you don’t need all that much pressure on it anyhow. Just snug it up.

I forgot to mention that I have another one here on the coffee table that I’m getting ready to fix up and get into the woods. I camo them out with camo duct tape so they are not so visible to crooks and deer.

I don’t see how you can recommend Moultrie’s I-40 to anyone. I have two of them and they have been nothing but trouble, they seem to use extremely unreliable components and the customers service is not the good. Sure they will send you a new replacement game cam, that won’t function properly either. I would much rather just buy one cam and have it in use for 5 or 6 years.

I have talked with other owners of the I-40 and 90% of them are dissatisfied also. I am not sure about what is going on with the quality control at Moultrie, but something is clearly wrong.

At this point I cannot recommend the game cams to anyone.

So far, I have sent the cameras back on three different occasions and I have a second I-40 that is starting to have the display going out on it, so I will be sending it back to you also.

    The time line.

Feb 2008 – Purchased first I-40 game cam

Apr 2009 – Purchased second I-40 game cam

Apr 2009 – Display went out in March, 2009 on first game cam. Sent game cam back to Moultrie April, 2009 and received a replacement game cam. Time in service = 11 months.

Aug 2009 – Started having problems with the motion detection on first replacement game cam. Sent back to Moultrie and received another game cam. Time in service = 4 months.

Sep 2009 – Second replacement game cam will not “boot up”. Will send back to Moultrie.
Time in service = 0 months

Sep 2009 – Display on second game cam is going out and is also having issues with not keeping correct time. Time in service = 4 months.

I have a moultrie I40 that worked flawlessly for 18 months and all of a sudden I couldnot read the LCD to set time etc. however the camera still tool great pictures. I contacte Moultrie and although the camera warranty is 12 months thay said send it in and we’ll fix it. I got it back and the LCD worked for one week but the camera kept taking good pictures, I did not want to send it back during the rut. A month later after the rut, I sent it back again and a 2 weeks later a brand new camera arrived. Great customer support for a comaera that was out of warranty.
