Dozens of factors can come into play when you are shopping for a trail camera.  Some of the more obvious are price, reliability, and picture quality.  I am currently working on creating a trail camera test and review system.  I am looking for feedback from all my fellow hunters.  No registration is needed.  To share your ideas all you need to do is submit a commit below.  Feel confident when entering your email because we will never spam you.  I am just looking for ideas on how to test the trail cameras and the criteria that you are looking for when buying a trail camera.

I checked with the owners of the Trail Camera Store and they confirmed that the Moultrie Infrared Trail Cameras are the most popular line on the market. The ease of use and low price make them an easy choice for any hunter. When you combine ease of use and price with amazing photos and reliability, you have a winning combination. The Moultrie I-40 offers the ability to capture still images and movies both day and night. When the I-40 was originally released many people complained of pictures being “white out” but I have not seen that as a problem since Moultrie updated their firmware.

The only real difference between the Moultrie I-40 and the Moultrie I-60 is that the I-60 has a viewing window for pictures in the field. I really do not see this as a determining factor when purchasing a trail camera. The I-40 has a great trigger and reaction speed and the pictures are very detailed. I have had no water, moisture, or insect issues with my Moultrie I-40 housing. I would like to mention that when you pull the mounting strap very tight, you can stress the case and create openings for moisture and insects if you pull to tightly. I have also been very pleased with battery life. When you check the camera ever two weeks and lose track of when you changed batteries last, that means the batteries are lasting long enough. Overall I love the Moultrie I-40 and recommend them to all my hunting buddies. The I-40 is one of the best, if not the best, trail cameras available today. Cuddeback has released the Capture for 2008. I would assume that it was Cuddeback’s intention to compete with Moultrie on the entry trail camera. The standard flash Cuddeback Capture can be found for around $199. The Cuddeback Capture IR is the infrared version and can be purchased for around $220. With both models being relatively new there are not many reviews available. Only time will tell if the Capture will be Cuddeback’s answer to Moultrie.

You should never just walk out in the woods and throw out corn/apples and put up a trail camera. This method will get you some trail camera pictures, but it will not get you the quality of deer and quality of pictures that you are looking for. There are many things that you must take into account before setting up a trail camera location.

You need to determine from what direction the animals will be approaching. Once you have determined the source direction, you can then start to think about camera placement and attractant placement. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west so you should avoid these directions at all cost.

In the trail camera video above, the sun is almost completely washing out the first minute of the clip.  The end of the video is great, but what if the buck only came out for a brief second and was blocked out by the sun.  Always try to face your camera in a northerly direction.  This way you are sure to miss the rising and setting sun.

Sunlight and morning fog can really take over a trail camera picture.  Don’t miss out on the buck of a lifetime by not taking trail camera direction into account.

Trail cameras are on watch 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, so as you might expect they can capture some truly amazing pictures. The title says “Trail Camera”, but they are limited to the trail, they are not limited to deer, not limited to corn piles. For the truly creative outdoorsperson, a trail camera can produce some amazing results. One example that always comes to mind are the pictures over at Game Camera Logbook. Comparing trail camera pictures can be a very simple method of selecting a trail camera. Todays models range in resolution from 1 megapixel all the way up to 6 megapixel infrared cameras. You must determine your own criteria. If you are only scouting your deer lease for bucks, then why do you need a 6MP camera? Can the 4MP deliver what you are looking for? Maybe you can sacrifice 2MP and buy two of the 4MP game cameras and cover more of your property.

The great part about todays trail cameras is the ability to capture pictures and video. The pictures do a great job at showing you the animals on your deer hunting lease but the trail camera videos add a whole new element. Being able to see a buck chasing a doe can cue you in on when the peak of the rut will hit.

Placing the trail camera over a scrape is a great place to set up for video clips. Another great place is at a fence crossing. You can get some really great footage as the deer pauses to make the jump. Below are some examples of daytime and infrared video clips from a Moultrie I40 Trail Camera.

The buzz term for 2008 has been “IR” or infrared.  The principle is that the infrared light from the flash will not been seen by the game.  I have never noticed the IR flash bothering the deer but there have been times when a noise from the camera seems to alert the deer to its position.  The IR flash will also not reveal the location of the camera to trespassers and poachers.

The Moultrie I60 infrared trail camera is an excellent camera for the price.  The trigger speed is around 1 second and the image quality is excellent.  A built in view finder provides the hunter with instant feedback in the field.  Although it may not seem like a huge bonus, the addition of a laser to aid in aiming the camera is a huge help.  With the Moultrie I60 you have the option of capturing a series of still images or video.  I have also been really pleased with the battery life of my I60.  I can get over 6 weeks of use from one set of batteries.

I would really like to hear the experience that other hunters have had with the Moultrie I60 infrared trail camera.  If you own an I60 please take a few moments to post a quick response.
